A few months after his round-the-world balloon flight, Bertrand agreed to support the projects of the UN Population Fund (UNPFA), Bertrand engages at every level, from villages suffering abject poverty to government ministries, with programs to educate women and introduce them to professional life. During his three mandates, from 1999 to 2011, his efforts were concentrated principally on India, but he also pleaded with the governments of several South American and European countries to launch information campaigns and fund-raising drives.

«It is not acceptable to leave 1/2 of humankind without basic rights: not only morally, but also for the safety of the world. An imbalance always create great friction even revolution; not only morally, but also rationally. 1/2 of the world doesn’t have access to the goods and services they need. This is not only cruel and unsafe, it is in contradiction with all the economical rules! But don’t let me be misunderstood, solidarity doesn’t mean sharing the wealth of rich with the poor, because everyone will then become poor. Solidarity means sharing potentials, helping development, undertaking political actions to fight against starvation, developing educational and health programs, respecting the value of life and human beings on this planet.»
Opening Speech Of the U.n. SOcial SUmmit 2000

Within the framework of its various agencies’ programs, the United Nations regularly appoints Goodwill Ambassadors to carry out work in the field alongside local authorities, the public and the media. Bertrand joins Carl Lewis, Ronaldo, Michael Schumacher, David Beckham and Angelina Jolie as a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador.

The Millenium Goal to reduce poverty in the world will not be reached unless all the rich countries agree to devote 0.7% of their GNP to development aid.
