Bertrand Piccard is appointed Goodwill Ambassador by the United Nations

After having recognized his ecological commitment by naming him Champion of the Earth 2012, the United Nations have decided to appoint Bertrand Piccard Goodwill Ambassador for their Environmental Program (UNEP).

« This nomination is an encouragement to continue showing how many incredible things can be done with renewable energies, but also to implement more energy efficient technologies in our world », said Bertrand Piccard, initiator and pilot of Solar Impulse.

After serving the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for 12 years, Bertrand will support the UN Environmental Program (UNEP) alongside actor Ian Somerhalder, photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand, singer Jack Johnson and model Gisele Bündchen. Through his speeches, interviews and meetings with Heads of State, Bertrand’s goal is to show that the protection of the environment is an exciting adventure, far away from the old mindset of a boring ecology which threatens comfort and mobility. For him, as for his friend and partner André Borschberg, Solar Impulse is a powerful message to promote the use of more environmentally friendly technologies. To show people that adopting clean technologies will improve their own lives and those of their fellow citizens. To show everyone that #futureisclean is already happening today.

UNEP’s logo stands on the airplane and several events will be organized during the second part of the Round-the-World-Tour which will take place between April and July 2016.

Together, we are stronger. As Bertrand will fly next year with Solar Impulse, his goal will be to bring UNEP’s values to as many people as possible.
