A tribute to pioneering spirit

Today's flight is a tribute to the work of my father Jacques Piccard. He was a real pioneer of marine ecology who worked to preserve the oceans and the lakes. In 1960, he dove to Challenger Deep with his Bathyscaphe. Discovering life at this depth was a great step in protecting the oceans: since this discovery, governments have banned the spillage of toxic and radioactive waste into ocean trenches.

Today, I'm flying over a surface of plastic waste as big as a continent. We have to continue his work and I support Boyan Slat's Ocean Clean Up initiative. I spoke with him later during the flight and I'm impressed by his commitment.
